KUSA - Start looking for another traveling buddy.
You have four more months to enjoy HOV2 on the Interstate 25 and US 36 express lanes before it goes to HOV3 on January 1, 2017.
HOV3 means a driver plus two in the car if you want to travel in the express lane at no charge.
“We’re adding capacity where we can with express lanes and by putting people in HOVE3, we’re putting people in less cars,” said Megan Castle with CDOT.
CDOT says for US 36 to be financially viable, it has to go to HOV3 so it can provide reliable travel times and pay for the infrastructure.
“Colorado’s population is expected to grow 47% to 7.8 million people by 2040,” Castle said. “That’s so many people on our roads and our existing infrastructure.”
They say this change in HOV is another way to accommodate traffic on the existing infrastructure.
“The express lane came on as hov 2 with the plan to always go to hov 3,” Castle said. “And that was part of the plan to pay for the roads and pay for these express lanes so we move to HOV3, as we grow in population, meet the traffic needs and we can pay off our added infrastructure.”
CDOT says they know this is a tough transition. They have resources for you if you want to begin making that transition to HOV3.
Kids and babies count in your HOV 3.
