RTD faces federal deadline as it strives to keep airport train open

DENVER - Facing a Nov. 5 federal deadline to make progress on dealing with malfunctioning safety equipment along the new RTD rail line to Denver International Airport, officials traveled to Washington Friday to meet with federal railroad regulators to discuss ways to address the problems and avoid a shutdown of service.

The Regional Transportation District and the train's private-sector operator, Denver Transit Partners, are under pressure to deal with grade-crossing gates on the airport line that don't function properly.
