DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - As millions of Americans prepare to fly this Thanksgiving holiday, here's what travelers need to know about the airlines that have the best (and worst) on-time performances right now, which airports perform the best, and what are some of the key amenities passengers can take advantage of at airports across the country.
Hawaiian Airlines (NASDAQ: HA) has had the best Thanksgiving on-time performance over the past five years among 10 carriers examined in a RewardExpert forecast. The next-best were Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL), Alaska Air (NYSE: ALK) and Virgin America (NASDAQ: VA), all of which were on time at least 85.7 percent of the time. The middle group of airlines comprises United Airlines (NYSE: UAL), American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) and JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU), which were on time at least 82.3 percent of the time. The bottom three were SkyWest Airlines (NASDAQ: SKYW), Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) and Frontier Airlines, all of which posted on-time rates of less than 80.5 percent.
Of course, as Jim Hammerand of the Puget Sound Business Journal pointed out, while these numbers may be indicative of something, they're hardly ironclad and may be particularly susceptible to yearly fluctuations as airlines make adjustments.
That same RewardExpert forecast pointed to specific airports' records of delays around the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The worst airport for delays, according to the study, was San Francisco International, with only 75.4 percent of flights arriving on time the past five years, followed by William P. Hobby Airport in Houston and Oakland International Airport, which put up 79.2 percent and 79.3 percent on-time rates in that time period, respectively.
