Flood warning issued for Waldo Canyon burn area

COLORADO SPRINGS - A flash flood warning was issued for parts of southern Colorado, which includes the Waldo Canyon burn area.

The warning prompted the Colorado Department of Transportation to close US 24 in Manitou Springs. Last summer, flash floods swept numerous cars off the highway, which is near a massive burn scar left by the 2012 Waldo Canyon Fire.

A web cam showed water and debris flowing over the burn scar Wednesday evening.

A storm system that moved into the Colorado Springs area Wednesday afternoon caused flooding in El Paso County. The storm produced heavy lightning, which sparked a house fire earlier in the day.

Colorado Springs and El Paso County authorities reported street flooding in several areas of the city. Firefighters were responding to several reports of stranded vehicles. Residents were warned to stay away from culverts and creeks.

Heavy rain also caused problems closer to the Denver area. Flooding along Cub Creek near Evergreen affected nearby homes and knocked down power lines, according to the Evergreen Fire Department.
