Loveland, Copper start snowmaking

KUSA - If you’re new to the state, perhaps the fact there was enough snow on Interstate 70 Tuesday morning to force the Colorado Department of Transportation to enact the chain law might come as a shock to you. After all, it’s barely October.

If you’re not, you know that’s basically normal business in the mountains, where summer mode has officially been disengaged and folks are already looking ahead to the next season.

That’s right, it’s time to whip out the overused “Game of Thrones” cliché.

Winter is coming.

And it’s so close that Loveland Ski Area turned on its snow guns Monday night. They hope to open sometime in mid-late October.

The resort says snow and cold temperatures this week are creating ideal snowmaking conditions.

Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are typically in a head-to-head competition to see who can open and close first.

So Arapahoe Basin, it’s your move.

Copper Mountain also turned on the snow guns. They plan to open on Nov. 11 at 9 a.m. That's a Friday -- so either plan a vacation day (or plot how you'll call in sick) now.
