JeffCo libraries won’t fine kids for late books

Multiple other libraries in Colorado have already enacted a similar policy.

The Jefferson County Public Library announced Monday afternoon that it will no longer fine kids for overdue books.

They cited a study that showed overdue fees don’t really make people return books any sooner, but that they can reduce access to the library itself.

Instead of overdue fees, libraries will now have regular due dates and reminder emails, according to a news release.

For what it’s worth, the Jefferson County Public Library says this won’t really have an impact on their bottom line, since late fines on children’s books make up less than one half of one percent of the library’s budget.

Denver Public Libraries, the Arapahoe Library District and Boulder County Libraries have already enacted a similar system.
