DENVER – A popular dog park near the ballpark neighborhood closed to the public for much of Friday because crews found it had too much poop in it.

Denver Parks and Rec closed the Railyard Dog Park Friday morning after crews trying to clear out weeds found an unsustainable amount of dog excrement.

A ranger posted near the gate kept owners and their dogs out.

Denver Parks and Rec mainly relies on owners to self-police dog parks in the city. They use a color coded warning system of signs to warn users when they feel there is too much poo.

Late Friday, Parks and Rec opened the park again to pet owners and volunteers for clean-up purposes only.

The agency says they’ve rarely ever had to close a dog park over this issue. They hope this closure will send a message to owners to pick up their pet waste.
