DENVER — Dumb Friends League (DFL) has a February adoption special to help you find your next furry friend – they'll take 40% off the adoption fees for dogs weighing 40 pounds or more.

"Our smaller dogs get a lot more interest and typically get adopted out a lot faster," said Meghan Jones, an adoption counselor with DFL. "So that's why we're having the promotion on our big dogs."

Just in time for Valentine's season, the shelter calls the special "Big Dogs, Big Hearts, Big Deal." They said so far, the promotion has been very successful, but they're hoping to find even more big dogs in a new home.

"The majority of the dogs that we do get are bigger dogs," Jones said. "Because they tend to have the most trouble finding homes and staying in their homes."

Jones said that big dogs have varying amounts of energy. Some are couch potatoes and just want to hang out at home and others have a lot of energy and make great exercise buddies.

The DFL has locations in Denver and Castle Rock. They care for thousands of homeless pets and horses each year with a mission to end pet homelessness and animal suffering.

If you're ready to adopt a big dog to your family, you can find the shelter's available dogs on its website.

For people not quite ready to adopt, the shelter has a fostering program for pregnant dogs and cats, their puppies and kittens, pets with medical needs and pets in need of temporary housing. You can find more information on the fostering program here.
