National Coffee Day recipes: Coffee-rub burgers with coffee mousse for dessert

Make these hearty burgers with a coffee-based dry rub and a tangy barbecue sauce. And you can really impress with tiramisu-inspired coffee mousse for dessert!

Saturday is National Coffee Day!

What better way to celebrate than with an entire meal made with coffee? Other than drinking a cup of coffee, I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This very-caffeinated dinner has coffee in the dry rub for the meat, in the barbecue sauce and in the dessert.

Coffee-rub burgers with Coffee and Dr. Pepper BBQ Sauce

Makes: 4 large burgers

Time: 45 minutes

Coffee and Dr. Pepper BBQ Sauce

  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 3/4 cup Dr. Pepper
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp Worcestershire
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp chile powder
  • 3 Tbsp coffee
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Coffee Rub

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp ground coffee
  • 1/2 Tbsp salt
  • 1/2 Tbsp paprika
  • 1/2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 Tbsp white pepper
  • 1/2 Tbsp onion powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 Tbsp coriander

  • 2 lbs Angus ground beef
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • Hamburger buns
  • Toppings: bacon, arugula, white cheddar, caramelized onions

  1. Melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and saute until soft.
  2. Add garlic and cook for about 1 minute more, then add remaining sauce ingredients. Stir to combine and bring mixture to a boil. Simmer for about 20 minutes or until sauce has thickened.
  3. Puree using an immersion blender, blender or food processor.
  4. While sauce is simmering, mix rub ingredients together in a small bowl.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, add meat, 2 Tbsp BBQ sauce, and salt and pepper. Mix well with your hands.
  6. Divide into four equal sections and form patties. Rub both sides with seasoning mix.
  7. Cook burgers in a skillet (or on a grill if you prefer) until they reach desired doneness.
  8. Spread BBQ sauce on both sides of bun and layer burger with your toppings!

Coffee Mousse

Makes: 4-6 servings

Time: 25 minutes

  • 1 packet (1 1/2 tsp) instant coffee
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 cup cold heavy whipping cream
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 8 oz mascarpone cheese
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1-ounce square semi-sweet baking chocolate

  1. Mix instant coffee with hot water. Stir well and let stand for at least 5 minutes.
  2. Beat whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Chill until ready to use.
  3. Mix mascarpone and powdered sugar until smooth. Add vanilla and coffee and mix again.
  4. Add whipped cream and very gently fold into mascarpone mixture so it doesn't lose its fluffiness.
  5. Spoon mousse into a large Ziploc bag. Cut off one corner.
  6. Pipe a layer of mousse into the bottom of a serving glass, then dust with cocoa powder. Repeat layers until you reach the top of the glass, ending with a layer of mousse. Top with shavings of baking chocolate.

*You can make this ahead of time and chill, covered, until ready to serve.
