KUSA — A popular St. Louis-based barbecue restaurant that opened a location in Colorado earlier this year took home first place in this year's 2018 Sandwich World Food Championship.

Sugarfire Smoke House chef David Molina beat out more than 30 of the world’s best culinary craftsmen to take home the top spot with his take on a Cuban Reuben sandwich.

The flavorful sandwich features smoked ham, pulled pork, pastrami, Swiss cheese, stone ground mustard, and a pickle between two sourdough grilled cheese sandwiches. Each of those grilled cheese sandwiches is topped with provolone, white American cheese and Koops’ Horseradish Mustard.

Molina’s sandwich scored an impressive 94 score overall, and came with a cash prize of $10,000.

To celebrate, Sugarfire’s Westminster location served the award-winning sandwich as a special on Nov. 16.

In an email from the owner, Sugarfire vowed to offer the sandwich once again on Nov. 23 because of the demand (the store sold 150 sandwiches in less than 2 hours) last week.

"Unfortunately, we had to turn away a lot of people, but promised everyone we would run the sandwich again this Friday!" Jamie Green said.

Those who want to try the sandwich can head to Sugarfire’s Westminster location at 14375 Orchard Pkwy Suite 100.

The 2018 World Food Championship was held November 10 in Orange Beach, Alabama, and featured top chefs from around the world. More than 5,600 dishes were served and judged in the process of determining the 2018 champions, according to the World Food Championship website.
