Help for your garden after a hail storm

A vibrant summer garden is still possible

Depending on the magnitude of the hailstorm, many plants in your garden can survive. So do your best to help them.

Start by removing the worst shredded leaves. Don't take them all off; the plants still need to continue photosynthesis. As the plants grow and produce new leaves, you can later remove some of these damaged but still functioning leaves.

When hail hits my garden, I treat the plants with liquid kelp. It's a fast-acting nutrient. This can be followed with--or combined with--a liquid fertilizer high in nitrogen. This will encourage fast, healthy new growth.

Don't give up. The summer has barely begun. You can replace plants that were totally pulverized with heat lovers such as geraniums, zinnias and marigolds. A vibrant summer show is still possible.

Even if you haven't been hit by hail, feed your container plants, vegetables and other annuals. They're working hard in this hot weather and need plenty of nutrients.
