How to help your garden recover from hail

Sooner or later, it happens to everybody. I got my second round of hail for the season last Sunday.

Depending on the size and duration of the hail, many plants can survive. But where to begin?

Start by applying liquid kelp to the plants. It's like chicken soup for damaged plants. Use a sprayer attachment on the hose or mix the kelp with water in a watering can.

Even a damaged leaf is better than none, so just do a light cleaning at first. After a week or so, start fertilizing aggressively with a high nitrogen fertilizer. This will promote new growth and new leaves. As new leaves appear, remove the battered ones.

Some plants that were too badly pulverized may not recover. They'll have to be replaced. It's not too late to plant peppers, basil, and many heat-loving annuals such as marigolds, geraniums, zinnias, coleus and begonias.
