Proctor's Garden: growing great lilies

Rob Proctor has tips for growing great lilies.

KUSA — Few flowers are as spectacular as Oriental lilies. Large and fragrant, they make a stunning display In July and August.

Oriental lilies are hybrids derived from several Asian species of lilies. They are true bulbs, unlike daylilies, canna lilies or calla lilies (although they are all related.).

They grow best in fertile, well-drained soil. Wet clay soil isn't suitable; they'll rot. If you don't have appropriate soil, grow them in pots. Lilies are a great asset on the patio in midsummer because of their beauty and fragrance, which is most intense in the evening. After they've finished blooming, the flowers can be deadheaded and the pots moved to a less conspicuous location. Never cut back the stems. Just snip off the faded flowers.

Oriental lilies are hardy in Colorado but potted ones must be protected in winter since they're more vulnerable to bulbs in the ground. After frost, store them in a shed, crawlspace or under a thick layer of compost.
