Proctor's Garden: Midsummer maintenance

As summer wears on, it's time do a little bit of work to keep your garden and plants healthy and looking great.

DENVER — Keeping your garden healthy and beautiful in midsummer requires maintenance.

Deadhead or cut back perennials as they finish blooming. This prevents them from going to seed. Some may rebloom.

Stake taller plants that threaten to fall over. Do it as inconspicuously as possible, preferably before they fall.

Groom and fertilize container plants as necessary. Although plants naturally shed lower leaves as they grow, if you have many yellowing leaves, it's a sign of overwatering. Use a moisture meter to determine if you need to water.

Set your lawnmower on high. When you do water your lawn, do it thoroughly. This encourages roots to delve deeply into the soil where it's cooler. When it rains, turn off your sprinklers. Get a rain sensor to account for this so you don't waste water.
