Each year, Girl Scouts around the country are honored with awards for citizenship and leadership. The highest honor is the Gold Award. On Monday, 48 Colorado Girl Scouts were presented with the Gold Award by state representatives at the Capitol.

Sarah Greichen, a junior at Front Range Christian School, not only earned a Gold Award but also won the Stephanie A. Foote Leadership Prize. The $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Sarah for her work on the nonprofit organization called Score A Friend.

Inspired by her twin brother, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sarah created the organization to encourage more schools to offer unified sports teams and clubs.

"Because of his disability he did not have access to the same opportunities as I did in our schools and community," Greichen said. "And his lack of inclusion ultimately led to him not having any friends at all. So my Girl Scout goal, my project goal, was to help him find a friend."

Girl Scouts of Colorado President and creator of the Leadership Prize, Stephanie Foote, said Sarah's project was exceptional.

"Sarah's project is an example of sustainable impact through leadership," Foote said. "I am proud to present this prize to her and recognize Girl Scouts whose Gold Award projects have made a lasting impact."

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts' highest award.
