DENVER - A pop-up park set to open in RiNo Art District later this month aims to create some much-needed public space in one of Denver’s most bustling neighborhoods.

Located at the intersection of Broadway and Blake Street, Boxyard Park will be a space for everything from concerts and arts classes to farmers markets and wellness events.

Denver's City Council signed off on a permit with the RiNo Art District on June 25, giving the park five months to inhabit the space. If all goes well during the pilot period, the park could become permanent.

“We are beyond thrilled to finally have this park fill a void of public space in RiNo,” RiNo Art District President, Jamie Giellis said in a news release. “This park posed so many exciting opportunities to try something new and really engage with our community to make it a reality.”

The community space will also feature a rotation of food trucks, a dog park and a climbing wall constructed by graduate students with the University of Colorado Denver’s architect program.

RiNo resident Chris Riedl came up with the initial vision for the park. Since then, the community has rallied around the cause, with over $70,000 already donated to help construct the park.

Volunteers plan to gather Saturday to put the final touches on the park ahead of a July 14 soft opening.

“Our final volunteer day to paint the park’s mural, plant flowers, and finish up construction on the dog park and picnic tables is this Saturday,” Boxyard Park Programming Director, Molly Pailet said.

On July 27, a grand opening celebration is planned at the park in conjunction with Final Friday. The kickoff event will feature live music, an art market and food trucks.
