Denver howls for essential workers to show support, unity during stay-at-home order

Neighborhoods around Denver have erupted in howls and cheers each night at 8 p.m. to show support for those on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

DENVER — Denver has joined cities around the world in spending a few minutes each night paying tribute to healthcare staff and essential workers risking their lives to help others during the COVID-19 outbreak.

If you've stepped outside at 8 p.m. over the last few nights, you've likely noticed an eruption of cheers, howls, whistles and banging pots and pans.

The gesture is part of a campaign that was organized on social media and has since spread in different iterations to cities across the world, one of which being the "Go Outside and Howl at 8 pm." Facebook page.

The idea is simple. Go onto your patio, balcony, driveway or porch and make some noise in support of healthcare workers, first responders and other essential employees on the front lines of the pandemic.

In Denver's Capitol Hill, cheers can be heard echoing throughout the neighborhood as scores of people line their patios and balconies, helping to providing a sense of togetherness during the quarantine.

9NEWS viewer Karen Boylan, who works as a nurse in Denver, said the random howling event has actually provided her a brief moment of laughter during an otherwise chaotic time.

Other people have said it feels good to still connect with their neighbors from afar during the nightly ritual. It also serves as a way to blow off a bit of quarantine-steam during the state's stay-at-home order.

If you plan on taking part in the 8 p.m. howl Tuesday night make sure to look up – you’ll be under the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year.
