DENVER — A historic movie theatre in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood is reopening its doors Friday after a nearly six-month long utility outage and renovation project.
The Esquire Theatre at 6th Avenue and Downing Street closed abruptly in December while staff worked on plumbing repairs. The theatre also used the temporary closure as an opportunity to make some exciting new upgrades to the building.
What is now known as the Esquire Theatre originally opened in the fall of 1927 as the Hiawatha Theatre with one screen and a balcony. These days, two screens there play a combination of new releases, independent, foreign and avant-garde flicks.
When the theatre reopens on June 14, guests can expect to see new seats, a new concession stand and updated amenities.
Next Friday's reopening includes screenings of Jim Jarmusch's "The Dead Don't Die," a 2019 zombie comedy starring Adam Driver, Bill Murray and Selena Gomez.
The Esquire is also well known for its Midnight Madness weekend series that includes frequent screenings of cult classics like the “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “The Room.”
“Be sure to come in and check out our modern, comfortable seats and improved theatre-going experience,” a Facebook post from the theatre reads.
