Memorial Day, often touted as the unofficial start to summer, is forecast to be downright soggy in the Denver metro.

Making it worse, a late snow that downed trees and scattered branches has delayed the opening of numerous campgrounds across the state.

Despite that, there's plenty to do outside over the long weekend. Here are a few suggestions to get you thinking.

See Colorado from Independence Pass!

So, Trail Ridge Road remains closed (because it looks like Sibera up there), but Independence Pass opens Thursday. CO 82 rises to 12,095 feet and is the highest paved state highway over the Continental Divide. It will probably be packed, but the views are incredible!

Go to a water park!

Island Kingdom Water Park of Elitch Gardens opens on May 27. Lazy river it up and be one of the first to ride the Mega Wedgie, which is new this year.

Go skiing!

Summer, schummer. Ski season lives on in Colorado no matter the month. Both Aspen Mountain and Arapahoe Basin will be open during the Memorial Day weekend.

The Aspen Mountain resort says it will have 130 acres of skiable terrain via the Ajax Express lift, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Saturday through Monday.

Arapahoe Basin, which is typically the last Colorado resort to close, is also still open – and plans to stay that way into parts of June!

Get a tan at Chatfield Swim Beach!

Colorado is pretty landlocked, but the swim beach in Chatfield State Park is a great alternative to you know, an actual beach. The swimbeach is open seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Operating hours are sunrise to sunset.

Take an old trolley ride through FoCo!

The Fort Collins Municipal Railway offers a 3-mile round trip on Birney Car 21 between City Park and Howes Street that takes about a half hour. The nonprofit that manages the trolley runs it from May through September.

Drink a rum runner at the Dillon Tiki Bar!

Rated as one of the top five beach bars in Colorado, the tiki bar at the Lake Dillion Marina opens on Friday. Although there's still some snow on the mountains (and ground) in the area, they are still on track to open.

Grand Lake Memorial Day Parade

Get to the root of what this day is actually about and take in the Grand Lake Memorial Day parade. This ceremony "honors those who served to protect and defend our nation" and begins promptly at 10 a.m.
