A notorious bank and train robber is the reason Monday's "You Are Here" -- the San Miguel Valley Bank -- is so well-known!

Telluride, Colorado may be known for its ski slopes resort appeal, but did you know that back in the 1800s, it was a part of bank robbery history?

Butch Cassidy, born Robert LeRoy Parker in 1866, along with his team, robbed the San Miguel Valley Bank in Telluride on June 24, 1889.

The bank, on the corner of Colorado and Fir, was Cassidy's first-ever bank robbery. Butch, Tom McCarthy and Matt Warner stole more than $24,000, which was supposed to go to miners in the area, according to the Telluride History Museum.

After the heist, legend has it the three men rode their horses down Main Street, shooting their revolvers into the air. The sheriff at the time tried to capture them, but the cowboys got away with horses they staged along their getaway route (how retro!)

'Til this day, the money was never recovered.

The bank burned down shortly after the robbery, but it was rebuilt to look identical to the old bank. It's now called the Mahr Building, it houses commercial and residential space.

If you're ever visiting, check out the plaque on the outside of the building denoting the robbery.

As for Cassidy, he fled to South America in the early 1900s. The circumstances around his death are still uncertain.

Now that's a cool piece of Colorado history for you!
