Colorado Senate again kills 'Ban the Box' bill shielding job seekers with a past

Colorado Senate Republicans on Monday rejected efforts once again to ban employers from putting questions on applications requiring job-seekers to acknowledge their criminal history.

Senate Minority Leader Lucia Guzman, D-Denver, pushed the “ban the box” or “chance to compete” bill as a way to give released felons a better chance at landing a job, which greatly reduces recidivism.

Employers still would be allowed to ask applicants about criminal histories during job interviews and could conduct background checks, but taking the question off initial forms at least would allow people a foot in the door, she said.

But business groups said that removing this box would take away a vital information-gathering tool, especially for small companies that don’t have human-resources departments to look into applicants’ backgrounds.
