Inside Denver's Sports Castle as it prepares for closure

DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - After 45 years as Denver's biggest destination for sporting goods, the Sports Castle is taking on a new role: Liquidation center.

The sprawling complex at 1000 Broadway -- the local flagship store for the Sports Authority retail chain -- is selling off merchandise at deep discounts ahead of transitioning into a liquidation facility for remaining inventory at metro-Denver stores that are closing.

The Englewood-based chain -- reportedly headed for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing -- confirmed Wednesday to the Denver Business Journal's Molly Armbrister that it will close the Sports Castle as well as stores in Greenwood Village and Boulder as part of a plan to shutter as many as 140 of its 450 locations nationwide.
