Natural Grocers recalls organic coconut due to salmonella

Lakewood-based Natural Grocers is recalling "Coconut Smiles Organic" due to the risk of salmonella contamination.

Six illnesses have been reported by individuals who ate Coconut Smiles Organic from Natural Grocers, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Production of the product has also been suspended.

The recall involves Coconut Smiles Organic sold under the Natural Grocers label in 10 oz. clear plastic bags. The coconut has packed-on dates prior to 18-075 (March 16, 2018) and the UPC code 8034810.

The recalled product was distributed to 145 Natural Grocers stores located in Colorado, Arkansas, Arizona, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Consumers who have purchased the coconut should return it to Natural Grocers for a full refund.
