BARCELONA, SPAIN - JULY 01: In this photo illustration, the app 'Uber' is launched in a smart phone on July 1, 2014 in Barcelona, Spain. Taxi drivers in main cities strike over unlicensed car-halling services.

Conventional wisdom suggests that in order to drive for Uber, you need a car.

Think again.

The car-sharing platform Getaround has partnered with the ride-hailing giant to enable people who don’t have a ride themselves to give rides to others.

Here’s how it works: Getaround, which enables users to instantly rent and drive cars owned by people in their neighborhood, now offers fleets of rideshare-ready cars in parking lots throughout participating cities that Uber drivers can rent by the hour.

The program launched in the San Francisco Bay Area in May 2017 and is now coming to Los Angeles and San Diego, with plans to bring on Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., soon. Getaround announced its Denver launch on Dec. 6.

As an introductory offer, Getaround has made the first booking day free for up to 12 consecutive hours. After that, drivers pay $5 per hour for use of the vehicle. There are no upfront fees, commitments or subscriptions, and no limit to the booking duration.
