Police say no cash was taken during the robbery gone bad and the woman who was shot remains in critical but stable condition.
Authorities also say the suspect made a statement to officers about the case.
The shooting happened during a robbery attempt this morning at the Il Vicino Restaurant in the heart of the city's business district.
Authorities say 30-year-old Allison Shaw had just started working at the restaurant as part of its management team after moving to Colorado Springs from New Mexico.
She underwent surgery at Memorial Hospital.
No other injuries were reported.
