19-year-old faces murder charge in woman's shooting death

DENVER — A man has been charged with murder in connection to a shooting in Denver's Sunnyside neighborhood that left a woman dead in early September.

19-year-old Elijah Lucero is accused of shooting 20-year-old Briseidy Jimenez-Ortega at West 39th Avenue and Bryant Street on Sept. 7, according to the Denver Police Department.

Jimenez-Ortega was transported to the hospital by ambulance, but died of a gunshot wound, according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

Lucero was arrested on September 26, and on Monday was charged with first-degree murder after deliberation and menacing in Denver District Court.

Lucero is scheduled to appear in court on October 4, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. for an advisement.
