Cherry Creek bus driver pleads guilty to sexual exploitation of child

Christopher Doughty was sentenced to 90 days in prison and probation after using the Whisper app to lure an underage girl to meet him for sex.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — A former bus driver for the Cherry Creek School District (CCSD) has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and supervised probation after pleading guilty Dec. 6 to sexual exploitation of a child.

An arrest affidavit for Christopher Lloyd Doughty says he sent sexually explicit messages to someone he believed was underage and ultimately agreed to meet up with that person.

Doughty received the 90-day jail sentence for the Class 3 felony as well as eight years of Sex Offender Intensive Supervised Probation, the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office said.

Doughty's employment with CCSD was terminated May 29, 2019.

The affidavit says Doughty was contacting and sending sexually explicit messages to someone he believed was a 14-year-old girl on Whisper, an anonymous messaging app, between May 14, 2019 and May 15, 2019.

The "girl" Doughty believed he was contacting was actually a detective with the Lakewood Police Department's Crimes Against Children Team.

Eventually, Doughty and the "girl" agreed to meet during Doughty's lunch break on May 15, his arrest affidavit says. The messages the affidavit says were exchanged before that meet-up make it clear Doughty believed they were meeting to have sex.

When Doughty arrived at the agreed location, the affidavit says he was taken into custody by Lakewood Police.

During an interview with police, the affidavit says Doughty admitted to sending the sexually explicit messages and told detectives he believed he was a sex addict. He told police he had not met any other juveniles for sex.

Doughty had been driving with CCSD since August 2017. He was placed on administrative leave on May 16 when the district learned of his arrest, according to a letter sent to parents.

He was a bus driver for the following schools, according to the letter:

  • Fall 2017: Fox Hollow Elementary, Timberline Elementary and Horizon Middle School; Route 209, special education bus.
  • Winter/Spring 2018: Eaglecrest High School, Summit Elementary and I-Team Ranch facility shuttle; Route 122.
  • 2018/2019: Summit Elementary and Joliet Center; Route 214, special education bus.
