Denver man who went missing in Portugal is dead, family confirms

Alex Tyk, 31, was last seen in late June in Lisbon, according to his mom.

A 31-year-old Denver man is dead after going missing in Lisbon, Portugal late last month, his mom confirmed Tuesday.

Alex Tyk, 31, was last seen June 27 in Lisbon, according to his mom Lynn Tyk.

Alex Tyk's family told 9NEWS that he was on a six-week trip and had already been overseas for two weeks when he went missing.

"Words to describe this loss feel insufficient, it weighs so heavy on our hearts," said the family in a statement.

Alex Tyk visited London and Paris and did some rock climbing in Fontainebleau before moving onto Lisbon.

"Alex lived a life to be admired," said his family in the statement. "He appreciated life’s beauty and expressed it passionately. His kindness and spirit will never be forgotten.”

Lynn said her son was traveling alone but met a group in Portugal from Wild Walkers Pub Crawl. She said he then ended up at Urban Beach Club, one of Lisbon's nightclubs, where he was last seen around 3:30 a.m.

He was supposed to meet a friend in Barcelona the next day, Lynn Tyk said.

Alex Tyk's family said he was staying at a place called Selena's Secret Garden and never checked out.

Alex Tyk's disappearance in June made international headlines.

One Reddit user who lives in Lisbon created fliers written in English and Portuguese for people to share when Alex Tyk went missing.

On them, Alex Tyk was described as "outgoing and friendly" with no medical conditions or disabilities. His mom said he had no record of mental illness either.

"To all of those who extended a helping hand in finding Alex, thank you for being a beacon of light for our family," the family's statement said. "We are not ready to say goodbye, so instead, so long [and] until we meet again."
