A suspect is dead and a deputy hospitalized after an early morning shooting in Denver.

Just after 3:30 a.m., an Adams County Sheriff’s deputy was called to the 8700 block of Galen Court to check on the well-being of a person in the area.

While at the scene, the deputy overheard a disturbance at a neighboring apartment and started to investigate, the sheriff’s office said.

A suspect then attempted to run away. When the deputy tried to arrest the suspect, the sheriff’s office says a fight broke out between the two of them.

At some point during the argument, the deputy shot the suspect – who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The deputy was also taken to the hospital, and remains hospitalized with injuries to his head and neck.

The Adams County Critical Incident Team is handling the investigation into the shooting.

The deputy, who has not yet been named, was placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
