Zhanda Carey is accused of assaulting a Denver deputy at the Downtown Detention Center.

An inmate at the Downtown Detention Center faces additional charges after he allegedly threw a book at a deputy and then repeatedly punched him in the face.

Zhanda Carey now faces charges for assault on a peace officer. According to the Denver Sheriff Department inmate search website, he was being held for a parole violation, weapons charges, criminal mischief and assault.

The attack at the Downtown Detention Center happened just before 11:25 p.m. on Dec. 8. The victim told police that he had asked Carey to go back to his cell, but he refused and sat at a table instead, according to the arrest affidavit.

When the deputy asked Carey to return to his cell a second time, he “walked towards the victim in an aggressive manner,” the affidavit said. When Carey got close to the victim, he is accused of picking up a book and throwing it at the deputy, before punching him in the face and pinning him down, according to the affidavit.

The deputy was taken to Denver Health for evaluation, according to Denver Sheriff Department spokesperson Daria Serna.

Serna said a second deputy was also injured while responding to the incident, but he wasn’t assaulted.

She could not say how seriously the deputies were injured.
