DENVER — The man accusing of hitting a school bus during Wednesday's blizzard and then trying to run from the scene had a backpack filled with suspected cocaine, methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia, according to a probable cause statement from Denver Police.
The crash happened just before 4 p.m. Wednesday at Havana Street and Smith Road in Denver's Stapleton neighborhood. Three students aboard the bus were not injured.
The bus was coming from Westerly Creek, part of the Denver Public School District, according to DPS spokesperson Will Jones.
It has minor scratches to the driver side where the car scraped along it, Jones said.
Jamey Dehart, 57, hit the front of the school bus, then took off running, a spokesperson for Denver Police said. He was caught and arrested a short time later, not far from the crash scene.
Dehart had slurred speech and his eyes were bloodshot and droopy, according to the probable cause statement. He was complaining of a head injury and taken to the Denver Health for evaluation.
While at the hospital, an officer searched Dehart's backpack. Inside it, the officer located numerous syringes, suspected crack cocaine, suspected methamphetamine, baggies and a scale.
Dehart is being held for investigation of driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. He will likely face additional charges related to the crash.
He has a long arrest record dating back to the early 1980s. He has previous arrests for drug charges, assault, domestic violence and theft.
