KUSA — The registered sex offender who has been arrested for the death of a woman who was jogging on a Connecticut path back in 2014 was previously convicted of sexually assaulting a child in Colorado three years earlier.

William Leverett, 27, was arrested by the Simsbury Police Department on Sunday, according to a news release. He appeared in court in Connecticut on Monday morning.

According to court documents obtained by 9NEWS, Leverett used to be associated with an address in Colorado Springs and was convicted of sexual assault on a child on May 23, 2011.

He is now accused of stabbing insurance executive Melissa Millan to death on a jogging path the night of Nov. 20, 2014. NBC Connecticut reports that according to court documents, Leverett told police he had never seen Millan before he saw her jogging, but was immediately attracted to her. When he decided “she’s way out of my league,” Leverett allegedly told police his anger escalated into a frenzy, and he confronted Millan with a knife that was in his vehicle.

Her body was found the next day, and no arrests were made in her death for nearly four years.

NBC Connecticut reports that Leverett was arrested four days after he walked into the Simsbury Police Department and allegedly confessed to the crime. Among the evidence collected by police were gloves they say Leverett was wearing the night of the stabbing, and confession letters he allegedly wrote the night of the crime.

Leverett is now facing charges for one count of first-degree murder.

Simsbury is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut with a popular of just over 23,000 people. It is just northwest of Hartford.
