NIWOT, Colo. —
A 50-year-old man was arrested Thursday outside of Niwot High School after deputies said he shouted profanities at a campus security member and then sprinted toward the door, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office (BCSO).
Erik Hecht-Nielson, 50, initially went to the school at 8989 Niwot Rd., unincorporated Boulder County around noon and requested to speak with a former athletic coach and was told that they were unavailable, according to BCSO.
He was referred to contact the athletic director for the St. Vrain Valley School District.
Hecht-Nielson left the school, but returned a short time later and was approached outside the front of the school by a campus security member and asked if he needed help, according to the sheriff's office.
He began shouting profanities, sprinted towards the front door and made a threatening posture toward the campus security member, according to BCSO.
Hecht-Nielson attempted to force entry into the school before he was restrained, the sheriff's office said.
He was taken into custody and booked on the following charges:
- Third-degree assault
- Obstructing a peace officer
- Resisting arrest
- Interference with school functions
- Trespass and disorderly conduct
Hecht-Nielson was unarmed and there were no injuries to school staff or the deputies that were on-scene.
Hecht-Nielson sustained a minor injury during the altercation and was treated and released from a local hospital before being arrested.
Although the reasons for the disturbance are still unknown, at this time there is no reason to believe that any students were in danger or targets of his actions.
