Officer-involved shooting in Trinidad

LAS ANIMAS COUNTY, Colo. — An investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed by officers in Trindad following a pursuit on Sunday evening.

Officers were called to an Alta Convenience Store located at 305 State St. to respond to a report of a suspicious person on Sunday just after 8 p.m., according to a release from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

Arriving officers attempted to speak with Lawrence Lovato, 46, who then got into a pickup truck and started to drive erratically while eluding officers in the area, the release says.

The officers were eventually able to stop Lovato’s vehicle on the northbound ramp to Interstate 25 at Main Street in Trinidad. An initial investigation indicated that Lovato then brandished a handgun, prompting officers to fire multiple shots at him.

Lovato was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, the release says. No officers were injured in the incident.

The Trinidad Police Department has requested that CBI lead the investigation into the shooting. Three officers with the department and one deputy with the Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

Trinidad is a town of about 9,000 people located in Las Animas County, about three hours south of Denver.
