Two people are dead after an officer-involved shooting Saturday morning in southern Colorado.
According to a release from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, it began when Saguache County sheriff's deputies tried to contact the male driver and female passenger of a stolen Jeep Patriot in Moffat, which is roughly 37 miles north of Alamosa.
A pursuit ensued, and the deputies were later joined by a Colorado State Patrol trooper and an Alamosa County sheriff's deputy.
CBI says the passenger in the Jeep brandished a shotgun during the pursuit, which stretched across several county roads. A CSP sergeant put out stop sticks on State Highway 17 near the Saguache/Alamosa county line, which disabled the Jeep.
The driver and passenger then both got out of the Jeep with the shotgun, and CBI says they may have been heading toward another vehicle that had pulled over to yield to the pursuit.
A CSP trooper fired multiple rounds at the suspects. At least one of them also fired shots, according to CBI. It's unclear who fired first. A CBI spokesperson says that's part of the investigation.
Investigators believe the male suspect shot himself. Both suspects were pronounced dead at the scene.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
The Alamosa County coroner identified the man and woman killed as: Nelson Billings, 26, and Jennifer Sharp, 37. Billings and Sharp were both from Lavaca, Texas.
Officials said Billings and Sharp may have been living in the Moffatt area.
CSP said Trooper Ramiro Contreras was the one who fired shots at the suspects. Trooper Contreras has been with CSP since 2007. He has been put on paid administrative leave.
