CANON CITY - Deputies with the Fremont County sheriff's office responded to the area of Chinook Dr in Canon City on June 24 and found a woman's body, a news release from the agency said.

The Fremont County Investigations Unit and the Colorado Bureau of Investigations are investigating her death as a homicide. They're still working to positively identify the victim.

The Gabriel Foundation, a parrot rescue group based in Elizabeth, has taken in 13 parrots that were seized by the sheriff's office after the woman's body was found. The birds are in poor health, according to Julie Murad with the Gabriel Foundation. She told 9NEWS they had been locked in a trailer without access to food or water.
