WHEAT RIDGE — The suspect who died after being shot by Arvada police in Wheat Ridge on Thursday night has been identified.
Bailey Greek, 18, was involved in an altercation with officers near West 49th Avenue and Kipling Street around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. He was shot several times by police, according to Detective Dave Snelling, Arvada police.
Greek was taken to a local hospital where he died of his wounds. No officers or bystanders were hurt, Snelling said.
Snelling said officers identified Greek as the same person who committed a string of crimes at different locations in Arvada Wednesday night and also had an outstanding warrant for felony menacing. Arrest records show menacing, burglary, vehicle theft and other charges in Greek's past.
Snelling said Greek was believed to have committed armed robbery, burglary, kidnapping and elder abuse Wednesday night, just a few blocks up the road from where officers shot him. At one of the locations, the suspect allegedly broke into an elderly woman's apartment in Arvada leaving her severely injured. She is expected to survive the injuries, Snelling said during a press briefing Thursday night.
Officers spotted Greek around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, first identifying him and then the car he was in, which was stolen according to Snelling. Officers followed Greek and attempted to arrest him. At that point, a confrontation broke out and Greek was shot several times, Snelling said.
Snelling said they had seen Greek on surveillance video from the night before carrying what they believed was a gun. According to Snelling, the man in the image below is Greek. The image is from surveillance video taken Wednesday night and was given to 9NEWS by Arvada police.
The shooting happened in Wheat Ridge near the Arvada - Wheat Ridge City limit. Wheat Ridge officers arrived on the scene after the shooting. The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team responded to as well to conduct an investigation of the shooting, as is standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting.
Snelling said as of 9:15 p.m., officers had not recovered a weapon from the scene.
This is not the first time Arvada police have been in an officer-involved shooting in Wheat Ridge.
Just a block away, at 48th Avenue and Kipling Street, Arvada officers shot and killed a suspect on Jan. 14, 2018.
