'We had 168 mph up on 6th Avenue': Lakewood PD wants people to stop speeding

Police are using #StillHere to remind drivers they're still ticketing for speeding during the stay-at-home order.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A wide-open road is not an open invitation to drive like Lakewood Police aren't watching.

During the stay-at-home order, streets and highways are less congested, but officers are seeing plenty of speeding drivers.

“We’re seeing a real increase in speeds especially up on the highways to where we’re getting people that are doing, 30, 40, 50 miles an hour over the speed limit," said Ty Countryman, spokesperson for the Lakewood Police Department (LPD).

LPD started tweeting about the bad driving behavior and other agencies across the state have done the same.

"Most of our posts are coming from [traffic stops] that we’re making," Countryman said.

Lakewood Police tweeted several photos of radar guns showing speeds topping 100 mph. The department also shared stories behind some of the traffic stops.

“We had 168 mph up on 6th Avenue," Countryman said. "That person never stopped for us.”

A tweet from LPD described the incident in more detail. Two motorcycles were racing in the mid-afternoon. "This is reckless, dangerous and unacceptable," the post read.

Another tweet described an incident involving a 16-year-old driver who was clocked driving 103 mph over the weekend.

Lakewood Police want to remind drivers officers are still working during the pandemic and will ticket drivers for excessive speed.

“There’s certainly consequences for driving along that fast," Countryman said.

Bad driving habits might lead to a citation and you making the next tweet from LPD.

“I would hope people would just slow down," Countryman said.
