WELD COUNTY, Colo. — Weld County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) deputies arrested a man accused of ramming a police cruiser, lead deputies on a chase and holding a resident at knifepoint.
On March 9, deputies responded to the Hill N Park neighborhood in Greeley on a report of car theft in progress. Officers learned the owner of a stolen Dodge pickup was tracking the truck through a GPS unit in the car.
Greeley police also responded to the car theft call and were in contact with the owner after the pickup was stolen from a Greeley business.
Weld County deputies searched for the stolen truck, locating it nearby. Several deputies attempted to contact the driver, identified later as 29-year-old Weld County resident Cody Kenneth Phillip Hamilton, but police said he twice intentionally backed into a sheriff’s office police cruiser, causing damage that disabled the truck.
Other deputies briefly pursued Hamilton but discontinued the chase when school buses entered the neighborhood. The driver was located a short time later, after the damaged pickup broke down, according to WCSO.
Deputies and residents said they saw Hamilton running between yards. WCSO set up a perimeter to contain Hamilton and a K-9 unit responded to track him, but deputies were unable to locate him.
Later that day, deputies received a report from a Hill N Park resident who said Hamilton entered their home and held them at knifepoint for more than two hours. The resident was not injured.
Sheriff’s detectives obtained an arrest warrant and began tracking Hamilton digitally. On Saturday, Hamilton was contacted by Platteville police on an unrelated incident and arrested on the Weld County warrant.
Hamilton was booked into the Weld County Jail where is he being held on a $100,000 bond on suspicion of attempted first-degree assault of a peace officer, false imprisonment, vehicular eluding and menacing.
He also is being held on a $25,000 bond on suspicion of aggravated motor vehicle theft out of Greeley, as well as a no-bond hold for failing to appear in court in a third case.
