Witnesses help apprehend suspect accused of robbing cyclist

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — A group of witnesses are credited with helping Douglas County Sheriff Office deputies apprehend a suspect accused of robbing a cyclist Tuesday morning.

The Sheriff's Office said deputies learned the victim was riding his bicycle on the bike path between South Quebec Street and South Colorado Boulevard when a man attacked the victim, stole his bicycle and fled the scene.

When deputies arrived, they found the a man matching the suspect's description being held by a group of people.

"This is a perfect example of human nature and the need to help those in need," said Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock. "This person was assaulted and those around him jumped into action to make sure the suspect didn't get away."

That suspect was later identified as 27-year-old Rodrigo Ameiorsano. He was arrested and booked into the Douglas County Detention Facility for:

  • Second-degree assault.
  • Robbery.
  • Theft.
  • Criminal mischief.

 Ameiorsano is being held on $25,000 bond.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and is receiving treatment for his injuries.
