A long-time school in Denver is saying goodbye after 47 years.

La Academia was started in 1971 for students coming from schools where they felt disconnected. It was started in an area of Denver where there weren’t a lot of options.

Founder Steve Johnsen says that has changed; there are a lot more schools and options in the area now.

“As a community school in a gentrifying neighborhood, it has been difficult to attract students and sustain proper funding” said Linda Jamison with the Denver Inner City Parish, the umbrella organization for La Academia.

Saturday, La Academia had a farewell event. There was food, a jump house for the kids, music and spoken word.

Students that had graduated years ago were there with old teachers and volunteers.

Johnsen isn’t sure what they’ll do next, but he says they might sell the building.
