These districts are canceling class today due to teacher walkouts

Teachers are rallying for better education funding and protections for their retirement plan.

KUSA — Some of Colorado's largest school districts are canceling class on Friday, April 27 due to a planned protest that will have many teachers at the State Capitol instead of in the classroom.

The teachers are rallying for increased K-12 funding and protections for their retirement plan.

Here's a list of the districts that have canceled class so far:

- Adams 12 School District (38,818 students)

- Adams 14 Schools (6,901 students)

- Aurora Public Schools (37,947 students)

- Boulder Valley School District (31,189 students)

- Cañon City School District (3,626 students)

- Cherry Creek Schools (54,815 students)

- Denver Public Schools (91,132 students)

- Douglas County School District (67,470 students) (canceling class on April 26)

- Jeffco Schools (86,347 students) (canceling class on April 26)

- Littleton Public Schools (15,517 students)

- Poudre School District (29,682 students)

- RE-1 Valley School District (2,284 students)

- School District 27J (17,115 students)

- St. Vrain Valley School District (32,171 students)

- Summit School District (3,557 students)

- Thompson School District (16,280 students)

- Weld County School District RE-1 (2,004 students)

- Weld County RE-5J School District (3,830 students)

- Weld County RE-8 School District (2,388 students)

The 27J school district also says they will not be able to offer childcare through their before and after school care programs.

The Boulder Valley School District is closed Friday but says they expect high school athletic practices and competitions to take place as scheduled. However, the morning care programs and kindergarten enrichment will be canceled.

Superintendent Dr. Jan Marie DeLay of the RE-1 Valley School District says the district understands and respects their teachers' ability to walk out, but added, "However, we regret this action is taking place during the school day and impacting students."

Denver Public Schools, the state’s largest school district, is canceling all classes on April 27 due to the protest. Until late Monday night, the district said they were just having a short day.

Aurora Public Schools says students will still be able to participate in extracurricular activities.

These announcements come the same week that dozens of teachers held a rally at the Colorado State Capitol that led Englewood Schools to cancel class for the day.
