Greeley company first to receive waiver to fly drones with parachutes over people

FAA issues permit allowing Colorado company to fly drones with parachutes over people.

GREELEY, Colo —     The Federal Aviation Administration doesn't allow drone flights over people.

But it issued its first waiver for a construction company in Colorado to do that, fly a drone with a paracute over building sites.

Hensel Phelps Construction out of Greeley will use the drones to document its work.

"What we will do is fly a job site to get information on the site so we can locate our laydown areas... so we're getting an aerial perspective," said Richard Lopez, the VDC manager for Hensel Phelps.

Lopez said, even with the waiver - they'll try not to fly job sites with a lot of people working below.

"Safety is key to us so even though we have this waiver we will do our best not to fly over people," he said, "We're setting the standard for safe operations we will continue to do that."
