Organization helps feed students while schools are closed

Schools are closed until at least mid-April but organizations are working to make sure everyone still gets to eat.

DENVER — With kids out of school, not everyone has access to healthy, fresh meals every day. One organization wants to make sure no student or family goes hungry, especially right now.

All schools have been closed in Colorado until at least mid-April in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The virus first popped up in Colorado on March 5 and since then hundreds of people have tested positive for COVID-19.

"We have apples, bagels," said Jessica Murison, Regional Partnership Manager for Revolution Foods.

Normally, Revolution Foods would be dropping food at Rocky Mountain Prep for kids to eat breakfast at their desks. Now, it's a table full of meals for the students and their families to come and take home.

"Families will be coming here today picking up breakfast, lunch, and supper," said Murison. "Our mission is really to create lifelong healthy eaters by introducing fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains."

Revolution Foods works with community resources like recreation centers, to get fresh, healthy meals to people who need them.

"We have a culinary center in Commerce City," said Murison. "The food is made freshly there and it's delivered by our wonderful dispatch team and drivers to the sites where they're serving the food."

Like everyone else, the way they serve has changed in the last few weeks.

"What changed is our preparedness, our readiness and the types of meals we're serving," said Murison. "We are still serving our full fresh meals and our grab n' go's which are very popular. We are also offering shelf-stable meals, we had those before, just not in the high demand that we have now."

Because now, more than ever, it's important to get meals to those who need them.

"Just because our children aren't in school doesn't mean they don't get that healthy meal," said Murson. "We're really providing a need of bringing families together at a time where we're all a little unsure. Our meals are really catered to make sure families are still being able to gather together and break bread."

Revolution Foods wants community programs to know that they have food and are here to help.
