It doesn't just restore normalcy; it also helps patients gain valuable strength and dexterity.

KUSA — Anyone who’s met a gamer knows it’s more than just a hobby: it’s a big part of their identity.

And the occupational therapy program at Craig is working on restoring that identity for some of their patients through adaptive gaming, which allows people with injuries that may prevent them from using normal controllers to continue doing what they love – and complete valuable physical therapy in the process.

“As a therapist, we also use games to work on movement they might need in rebuilding strength,” said Erin Muston-Firsch, an assistance technology specialist at Craig.

The programs includes adaptive controllers, as well as built-in accessibility features for some gaming systems.

This includes sip and puff devices, voice controls and modified buttons.

Craig even hosts game nights for some of its patients.

“When you’re doing rehab, they’re worried about adjusting and recovering,” Muston-Firsch said.
