16 horses are believed to be dead after a fire swept through a barn in Brighton overnight.
Brighton Fire Rescue District was initially called to an address near E. 144th Avenue and Harvest Road just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, but firefighters found the fire at an address near E.136th Avenue and Powhaton Road.
At least 10 horses were reported dead in the first update from fire officials, but investigators say new information from the barn owners suggests as many as 16 horses may have been trapped inside.
Fire investigators believe the fire started in the southwest corner of the building where a refrigerator and light were housed.
There is no word yet on the exact cause, but investigators have not found any evidence indicating that the fire was set intentionally.
