Gov. Ducey wants local buildings and cities to Light AZ Blue

“We invite businesses and buildings across the state to join us in the salute to these heroes," Gov. Ducey said.

ARIZONA, USA — Governor Doug Ducey announced Wednesday a state-wide tribute to honor healthcare workers and first responders on the front line of the coronavirus crisis.

“Arizona is lighting the State Capitol blue to express our support and gratitude to our frontline medical workers and first responders,” Ducey tweeted Wednesday. “We invite businesses and buildings across the state to join us in the salute to these heroes.”

The State Capitol, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Phoenix City Hall, State Farm’s Marina Heights building at Tempe Town Lake, and others will shine blue lights to honor the doctors, nurses, EMTs and others that are saving lives every day.

The City of Scottsdale has turned the taxi lights at its airport blue, and Westworld has turned blue a 40-foot horse statue called Impulsion. Scottsdale is also inviting all citizens to hang up any blue lights they may have, according to spokesman Kelly Corsette.

“It’s a relatively easy thing for a lot of us to do to show our support for the thousands and thousands of people who are on the front lines of this virus,” Corsette said.

Scottsdale has planned its tribute for every Thursday night as long as the crisis continues. Governor Ducey’s tweet did not specify a day or time.

The local efforts mirror similar campaigns across the country with the same goal.

Freedom Tower in New York City lit its antenna blue. Niagara Falls turned blue. The Mercedes Benz Super Dome in New Orleans also put out its blue lights. Cinderella Castle at Disney World did the same.
