DENVER - Denver's transportation hub of the future is a far cry from what it was just a decade ago.
Then, historic Denver Union Station — built in 1880s after an earlier depot was damaged by fire — was a dimly lit, dingy, echoing, mostly empty train hall with a few offices.
The detail work on the plaster columbine flowers lining the upper walls was obscured by dust and grime.
Station employees routinely shooed away transients who dug through the trash to collect recyclable cans. And behind the station were empty fields full of weeds, trash and more.
