It’s been nearly a month since two men were killed in a home explosion in Firestone – and that community is still reeling from the loss.

One of the victims will get a special tribute on Monday.

For years, Mark Martinez coached girl’s softball with the Carbon Valley Parks and Recreation District.

His family will be presented with his jersey on Monday, and will also be part of a ceremony aimed at recognizing all of the contributions Martinez made to the recreation district and community.

Martinez and his brother-in-law Joey Irwin were killed in an explosion while they were in the basement of his home on Twilight Avenue in Firestone.

Martinez’s wife Erin was also hurt.

Officials have since said the explosion was caused by an old, abandoned gas line that was leaking into the home.

The tragedy came as a huge shock to those who knew the two men and their families.

The ceremony is slated for 7 p.m. Monday at the Firestone Sports Complex.

It is open to the public.

Softball players will be wearing patches in Martinez’s memory all season long.
