FRUITA, Colo. — A controversial billboard on the Western Slope is garnering national attention online, according to KKCO in Grand Junction.  It reads, "Welcome to Colorado, where you can get a safe, legal abortion."

The billboard is just east of the Fruita exit off of Interstate 70.

ProgressNow Colorado is behind the sign and said they just want to make people feel welcome.

"I want people to feel represented, I want people to know that there are other people that feel the same way they do even if we don't talk about it that often right now," Alex Ferencz, reproductive rights outreach director for ProgressNow Colorado, told KKCO.

A picture of the billboard has been shared on social media thousands of times after Alabama signed a restrictive abortion bill last week.

Ferencz says what's happening in Alabama needs to spark a conversation nationwide.
